ABSTRACT

Introduction: The loss of dental elements can lead to excessive bone loss in the posterior maxillary segments, which can limit the placement of dental implants in that area, the pneumatization of the maxillary sinus and the absence of dental elements to keep the bone active are some of the main causes. Among the wide range of available grafting materials, bovine hydroxyapatite has been extensively studied and has shown excellent clinical and histological results. Materials and methods: A total of 17 maxillary sinus floor elevations were performed (n = 8 Osteodens, n = 9 Bio-Oss). After a healing period of 6 to 8 months, a block of the grafted area was obtained using trephines and analyzed by histomorphometry. Results: The percentage of neoformed bone tissue was higher for Bio-Oss (39.0% ± 11.1) compared to Osteodens (33.4% ± 8.3), while the remaining graft values were slightly lower in Bio-Oss compared to Osteodens (16.3% ± 11.2 and 20.8% ± 12.1, respectively). The proportion of connective tissue was similar in both groups (44.7% Bio-Oss and 45.8% Osteodens). Age, gender, and residual height of the sinus floor did not show statistically significant differences. Conclusions: In this study, both graft materials (Bio-Oss and Osteodens) showed no statistically significant differences in their ability to regenerate suitable bone tissue for implant placement after 6 months of healing. Further studies with a larger sample size are needed to validate these results.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The work aimed to evaluate the weight-length relationship and the condition factor, characterizing the biometry, anatomy, histology and volumetric density of the liver of Brycon amazonicus, in different stages of body growth. The experiment used twenty specimens in four stages of body growth (PI, PII, PIII and PIV) harvested every 90 days, containing five specimens, each group. The livers were dissected, weighed (g) and processed routinely using the hematoxylin and eosin technique. The data were submitted to analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation test and linear regression. The equation that represented the weight-length relation was W = 0.05902 x L2.63, with negative allometric growth, but with a relative condition factor equal to 1.0. The liver was divided into three lobes with the gallbladder close to the right lobe and its color varied from light red to dark red, not varying in relation to other fish species. The hepatosomatic relationship followed body growth until the PII group stage and then declined, demonstrating the behavior of its development in Brycon amazonicus. The organ consists predominantly of hepatocytes, followed by sinusoidal vessels and capillaries, with histological morphology similar to that of many species of fish. Melanomacrophage centers were found only in the most developed animals, but in small quantities, prompting the development of new research on this cell, in this species. In this way, research of this nature allows the characterization of fish species, helping to improve breeding methods, understanding pathological processes caused by diseases, and obtaining better productive capacity, serving an increasingly demanding and prosperous market.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To investigate microanatomic organizations of the extratemporal facial nerve and its branches, hypoglossal nerve, sural nerve, and great auricular nerve. Methods: Nerve samples were dissected in 12 postmortem autopsies, and histomorphometric analyses were conducted. Results: There was no significant difference between the right and left sides of the nerve samples for the nerve area, fascicle area, number of fascicles and average number of axons. The lowest mean fascicle number was found in the hypoglossal nerve (4.9 ± 1.4) while the highest was in great auricular nerve (11.4 ± 6.8). The highest nerve area (3,182,788 ± 838,430 μm2), fascicle area (1,573,181 ± 457,331 μm2) and axon number (14,772 ± 4402) were in hypoglossal nerve (p < 0.05). The number of axons per unit nerve area was higher in the facial nerve, truncus temporofacialis, truncus cervicofacialis and hypoglossal nerve, which are motor nerves, compared to the sural nerve and great auricular nerve, which are sensory nerves (p < 0.05). The number of axons per unit fascicle area was also higher in motor nerves than in sensory nerves (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In the present study, it was observed that each nerve contained a different number of fascicles and these fascicles were different both in size and in the number of axons they contained. All these variables could be the reason why the desired outcomes cannot always be achieved in nerve reconstruction.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of histopathological and histomorphometric features in oesophageal biopsy of patients presenting with symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Material and Methods: Present study included 42 patients and 12 controls. Complete clinical evaluation followed by endoscopic examination of the patients was done and multipleoesophageal biopsies were taken. Biopsies were processed routinely and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin and examined for any changes related to GERD. Morphometric assessment was done by using Leitz optical micrometer. The histological scoring was done based on the parameters: basal cell hyperplasia, stromal papillae elongation, cells with irregular nuclear contour (CINC), eosinophilic infiltrate, gastric and intestinal metaplasia. A numerical score was assigned to each parameter and sum of these scores represented the total score. Statistics: The statistical analysis was done using graph pad prism, Medcalc software and Windows MS office. P value and mean standard deviation (SD) was calculated. Results: The endoscopic findings of all the controls and 83.33% of patients were normal. Only 16.67% of patients had reflux associated changes of varying grades on endoscopy. Oesophageal biopsy of all patients had changes related to GERD on histology. Immunohistochemistry confirmed that cells with irregular nuclear contour were T- lymphocytes. The mean (SD) histological scoring of control and patients were 1.75 (0.62) and 5.66 (1.31) respectively. The difference was considered to be statistically significant (P < 0.001). Thus, it was suggested that a cut-off of histological score > 3 can be used to indicate GERD. Conclusion: Patients with gastroesophageal reflux symptoms can have normal endoscopic findings but can be diagnosed on the basis of histological changes in the squamous epithelium. Scoring of the histopathological parameters along with the cut-off value can give a definitive diagnosis of GERD.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to examine the dorsal lingual epithelium of the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) of the family Falconidae. The tongue in its dorsal, lateral and ventral surfaces is covered with a non-keratinized multilayered stratified squamous epithelium. Lamina propria is present beneath the epithelial layers. Morphometrically, thickness of the apex tongue epithelium is more than that in the tongue body. Thickness of the ventral surface of the tongue is less than that in the dorsal one. Thickness of the lateral surface of the tongue was thicker than that in the ventral one and tongue body. Large and small conical papillae appeared on the posterior dorsal surface of the lingual body. There are lingual glands in certain areas of tongue body with numerous openings through the dorsal surface.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To evaluate the osteogenic effect of concentrated growth factor (CGF) combined with deproteinated bovine bone mineral (DBBM) in site preservation using clinical and histomorphometric observations.@*Methods @#A total of 26 patients who needed extraction of affected teeth and received staged implantation after site preservation were selected. The patients were randomly divided into the DBBM group (Bio-Oss was implanted simultaneously after extraction) and CGF+DBBM group (CGF+Bio-Oss was implanted simultaneously after extraction), with 13 patients in each group, and both groups were covered with Bio-Gide collagen membrane. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed preoperatively and 6 months later to measure the changes in alveolar bone height and width, and the bone specimens were drilled 6 months after site preservation during implant surgery for histological analyses.@*Results@# CBCT showed that the height and width of alveolar bone were absorbed 6 months after site preservation in the CGF+DBBM and DBBM groups, and the reduction in alveolar ridge width in the CGF+DBBM group was statistically less than the DBBM group (P <0.05). The histomorphometry results showed that the percentage of new bone in the CGF+DBBM and DBBM groups were 35.30% ± 3.56% and 26.38% ± 5.04%, respectively, and the amount of new bone in the CGF+DBBM group was statistically higher than the DBBM group (P<0.05). @*Conclusion @#CGF combined with DBBM is superior to DBBM in maintaining the alveolar bone volume and shape in site preservation, which creates favorable conditions for implant restoration.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the changes of alveolar bone in aged rats. The mandibles of the 4- month and 22-month aged rats were scanned by micro-CT. After the reconstruction of the alveolar bone, the distance between the cemento enamel junction (CEJ) and the alveolar bone crest (ABC) was measured. The micro architectures of the inter-radicular alveolar bone were analyzed. The 22-month rats experienced the reduction in alveolar crest height in the buccal side and the lingual side, and significant increase in alveolar bone loss compared with the 4-month rats. The 22-month rats had a porous microarchitecture, the trabecular arrangement was obviously dissociated with the expanded inter-bone spaces of marrow, and the bone histomorphometry analysis showed the decreased bone volume/tissue volume and trabecular thickness in the 22-month rats. These results suggest that alveolar bone loss and alveolar trabecular bone deterioration might contribute to the weakening of molar support in the elderly.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Epithelial rests of Malassez (ERMs) are fragments of Hertwig's sheath in the periodontal ligament. There is extensive knowledge of their role in the etiology ofpathological processes and current evidence links them to maintenance of periodontal homeostasis. The aim of this study was to assess the behavior of ERMs with relation to the changes in periodontal tissues during growth in an experimental model with Wistar rats. Mesiodistal sections were made of the first lower molars from Wistar rats aged 1 month (n=7), 3 months (n=7) and 5 months (n=6). Sections were stained with H&E to evaluate number of ERMs/ mm, size/area of ERMs (μm2), height of periodontal ligament (PL.h) (pm), area of cement in the furcation zone (C.Ar) (μm2) and bone area related to the ERM zone (BAr/TAr)(%). Posthoc Bonferroni and ANOVA were applied for statistical analysis of results. Number of ERMs/mm declined significantly with age (1m: 4.34±1.51, 3m: 1.48±0.89, 5m: 0.27± 0.50, p<0.05), and there was great variability in size. There was significant increase in C.Ar (1m: 3418.96 ± 905.88, 3m: 19365.76 ± 5500.52, 5m: 32182.76 ± 7114.51, p< 0.05) and interradicular (BAr/TAr) (1m: 25.26 ± 2.37, 3m: 44.70 ± 3.95, 5m: 46.81 ± 7.80, p< 0.05: 1 vs 3, 1 vs 5). There was significant decline in PLh at 5 months (1m: 141.42 ± 29.25, 3m: 162.06 ± 28.21, 5m: 124.72 ± 18.67, p< 0.05: 1 vs. 3, 3 vs. 5). The decline in number of ERMs as animal age increases may be related to the significant increase in C.Ar and reduction in PL.h. It remains to ascertain its relationship with the increase observed in BAr/ TAr. Further studies are needed to learn more about the role of ERMs and their relationship with periodontal tissues when confronted with different normal and pathological stimuli.

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to determine adequate levels for sodium butyrate inclusion in pre-hatching and pre-starter feed in order to minimize the negative effects of post-hatch delayed placement on broiler chicks. Newly-hatched chicks were allotted in a completely randomized design, with five treatments, each comprising five replicates of ten birds each. Five dietetic levels of sodium butyrate (control, 0.050, 0.075, 0.100 and 0.200%) were used in the pre-starter feed offered to the chicks in the transporting box and during the pre-starter phase. Performance, yolk sac retraction, plasma glucose concentration, weight and histomorphometry of the small intestine were evaluated after 24 hours of feed access and at 7 days of age. A metabolic trial was performed when the chicks were seven to ten days of age. Supplementation of 0.1% sodium butyrate increased the development of broiler chicks' intestinal villi at seven days of age but was not able to improve performance in the pre-starter phase. Supplementation with sodium butyrate in a diet offered in the transportation box does not improve broiler performance in the pre-starter phase. Supplementation of up to 0.16% is recommended, in order to improve the metabolizability of the ether extract for broilers at seven days of age.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract The reproductive system has a fundamental role in population dynamics and several reproduction strategies have been shaped by the environment over time. Many environmental pressures are generated by releasing pollutants, as endocrine disruptors, that can affect the reproductive system of individuals, among them invertebrates. The freshwater snails Biomphalaria spp. are used as biomonitor in several ecotoxicological studies; however, there are few studies about gametogenesis and morphology of reproductive snail cells, which could be used as a new biomarker. In this sense, the current study aims to characterize Biomphalaria glabrata gametogenesis, bringing new histomorphometric parameters for germinative cells. Results showed that the hermaphrodite tissue is formed by several acini with simple pavement epithelium with germinative and somatic cells. Oogenesis was classified into five developmental stages (OI to OV) according to diameter, nucleus area, total area, and follicular cell development, and then classified into previtellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes. The spermatogenesis was classified into spermatogonia (Spg), spermatocytes (Spc) and spermatids that were subdivided into five stages (Spt I to Spt V) according to cytoplasm losing, and nucleus spiralization along with Sertoli cells development. Thus, the present study highlights the gametogenesis of B. glabrata with new histomorphometric parameters, which can be an important tool for ecotoxicological and molluscicidal developmental further studies.

ABSTRACT

This study performed a histomorphometric analysis of the retina and estimated the visual acuity of three fruit-eating bats of the genus Artibeus, including Artibeus lituratus, Artibeus planirostris and Artibeus obscurus. In total, 13 animals were used for this study, in which the retinas were hemidisected, fixed, cut, and stained. The visual acuity was determined by the density of ganglion cells in the retina and the retinal layers were also measured from histological sections. The retinas of these bats are avascular, do not present tapetum lucidum in any quadrant, and have the 10 retinal layers common in mammals. Moreover, it was observed that the thickness of the retina in the central region was significantly higher in all measured parameters (p<0.001), except for the outer plexiform layer (OPL) which was significantly higher in the peripheral region (p<0.001). The retinas of the three species showed a horizontal visual streak with a higher concentration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) at the inferotemporal region. In addition, the species A. lituratus exhibited extras areas of high cell density in the retina. Thus, A. lituratus showed the highest visual acuity (1.92 cycles/degree), while A. planirostris showed a visual acuity of (1.77 cycles/degree) and A. obscurus exhibited the lowest visual acuity (1.50 cycles/degree). All these characteristics are related to the echolocation system and the eating habits of each species. Therefore, it can be concluded that bats of the genus Artibeus have a high visual acuity value compared to other echolocating bats and all these differences might be directly linked to the phylogeny of the genus.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The types I and III collagens present different tonalities of birefringence in histological sections stained with Picrosirius red, that can be analyzed under a polarized light microscope. Based on this property, collagens can be quantified by histomorphometry. However, many variables can affect the color distribution in the histological image, and the appropriate choice of the analysis parameters have a significant influence on the final result. The objective of this study was to compare the histomorphometric quantification of collagen in the equine skin by counting points planimetry and color segmentation with different configurations to determine the best method of evaluation. For planimetry, three different graticules (391, 588 and 792 intersections) were used and, for color segmentation, six combinations of hue and brightness in ImageJ software. The values were submitted to the Friedman test followed by Tukey with 5% significance. The results showed that the quantification of collagens in the graticule of 792 intersections was equivalent to the results of color segmentation with a brightness of 1-255 and hue of 0-42 and 43-120 for collagens type I and III, respectively. Automatic analysis of the color segmentation, using suitable configuration for brightness and hue can replace the counting points planimetry reliably and safely.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Bats belong to the order Chiroptera, family Phyllostomidae, and present a wide diversity of reproductive strategies. However, information on the reproductive biology of male bats is scarce, mainly in the Northeast Region of Brazil. Thus, this study evaluated the seasonal testicular histomorphometry of the bat Carollia perspicillata in fragments of the Atlantic Forest in Pernambuco state. To this end, adult males were collected, euthanized for removal of the testicles, and later submitted to a routine histological technique. Histomorphometric analysis included assessment of the areas of tubular and intertubular compartment occupation, as well as quantification of spermatocytes, rounded spermatids, elongated spermatids, and Sertoli and Leydig cells. Results indicated that this bat species presents reproductive seasonality, because significantly higher averages of the testicular parameters were observed in the rainy season, which is a period of greater availability of food resources. Such inferences indicate that there is a synchrony between peak spermatogenesis and hormonal inversion in the months of high precipitation; furthermore, a higher carrying capacity of the Sertoli cells is noted. C. perspicillata males possibly present greater sperm and androgenic activity in the rainy season, associated with increased tubular area and number of spermatogenic cells, as well as with the intertubular area and number of Leydig cells, respectively.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Background: Lead is a heavy metal known to exertpathological effects on the male reproductive organs.Aim and Objectives: To study the degeneration ofspermatogenesis and histomorphometric alterations ofthe testicular microanatomy of male Wistar rats afteroral lead intoxication. Material and Methods: Eightymale Wistar rats were divided into four groups (1- 4)and further subdivided into 4 subgroups (A, B, C, andD) each containing five (n=5) rats depending on dosageand duration (3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks) of treatment. Group1 received 1 ml of distilled water daily. Group 2received 0.5% lead daily, Group 3 received 1.0% oflead daily and Group 4 received 1.5% of lead dailyrespectively. Testicular weights, histomorphometryand histological analysis using Toluidine Blue wereobserved. Results: It showed that significant reductions(P<0.05) in testicular weights in the treatment groupsadministered with lead for periods of 3-9 weeks ascompared to the control while a significant increase(P<0.05) was observed in the group administered for12 weeks. Histomorphometric analysis showedsignificant reductions (P<0.05) in Seminiferous tubulediameter, length of germinal epithelium and crosssectional in the treatment groups administered forperiods of 3-12 weeks while significant increase(P<0.05) in lumen diameter was observed in thetreatment groups compared to the control.Histopathological analysis revealed that Leadinfluenced the testicular cytoarchitecture by disruptingthe processes of spermatogenesis in the treatmentgroups as compared to control. Conclusion: The studyshowed that different dosages of lead over a period oftime had gonadotoxic effects and tendencies to altertesticular profiles by disrupting spermatogenesis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the effects of kelulut honey on bone structure and histomorphometry against glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Methods: Thirty-five male rats were used (n = 7). Twenty-eight adrenalectomized rats were divided into four groups; each group was given normal saline 0.9% (negative control), calcium water (positive control), kelulut honey (200 mg/kg/day and 400 mg/kg/day, respectively) treatment, respectively. All of them were administered with intramuscular injection of dexamethasone (120 μg/kg/day) to induce osteoporosis. Seven sham operated rats were given vehicle palm olein 0.05 mL/100 g/day by intramuscular injection and 0.1 mL/kg/day orally. All the treatments were given daily for 2 month. Lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress enzymes were measured. In addition, bone structural and histomorphometry analyses were also conducted. Results: Two-month glucocorticoid treatment increased the level of malondialdehyde and decreased superoxide dismutase significantly. No significant changes were found in the activities of catalase and glutathion peroxidase. Bone volume/tissue volume and trabecular number were significantly reduced while trabecular separation of the femoral bones was increased which corresponded to the decreased number of osteoblast surface after two months of receiving glucocorticoid treatment. Kelulut honey treatment restored the level of superoxide dismutase and reduced malondialdehyde significantly (P<0.05). Moreover, kelulut honey increased bone volume/tissue volume, trabecular number and decreased trabecular separation significantly (P<0.05), which were further confirmed by increased osteoblast surface and decreased osteoclast surface number (P<0.05). Conclusions: Kelulut honey may have potential bone protective effect, and may be a prophylaxis against glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
